iPhone 4 Glass – Will it break?

iFixYouri did a little science experiment the other day. Many people have been talking that the new iPhone has strong glass, less prone to scratching, 30 times stronger than plastic, etc. Will the new glass prove to be ultra strong and never break?

I’m going to go with a no on this one. Why may you ask? They do say that it is 30 times stronger than plastic, and there is a video of it bending. Bending, yes. They did also state that the iPhone 3Gs Glass was stronger when that came out as well. It may bend more, but can it handle shock and sudden impact, that is the real question. That is what causes 95% of glass shattering. Not because you bent the glass in your pocket, not because you dropped it and it bent, but really because of sudden impact.

Land it flat on the ground, and it will smash. We have evidence. Before i show you the evidence, I am going to point out a design flaw that will bite them in the future. On the new iPhone, the glass basically sits on top of the aluminum frame. On the old iphone, it was recessed and protected by a chrome bezel.

We have a full iPhone 4(minus the circuit board), here at our shop and decided to do a little drop test. This drop was performed from 3.5 ft up. Mind you that these parts ARE original apple parts. Laser etched and all. The iPhone 4 did survive 2 drops, as expected, but on the 3rd drop there was a loud POP, and yet again, shattered glass.

'Brute force' script snatched over 100,000 iPad 3G e-mail addresses

The harvesting of over 100,000 iPad 3G owners' e-mail addresses was not a hack or a classic data breach, but a brute-force attack of a minor feature AT&T offered to Apple customers, experts said Wednesday.

According to New York-based Praetorian Security Group, which obtained a copy of the PHP script used to scrape e-mail addresses from AT&T's servers, the attack succeeded because the mobile carrier used poorly designed software.

A nine-person hacking group known as Goatse Security claimed responsibility for the script, which amassed 114,000 e-mail addresses.

"There's no hack, no infiltration, and no breach, just a really poorly-designed Web application that returns e-mail address when ICC-ID is passed to it," Praetorian said in a late Wednesday entry on its security blog.

An ICC-ID (Integrated Circuit Card Identifier) is the unique number assigned to each SIM card. A mobile device's SIM stores information that identifies the specific wireless customer to his or her carrier. The iPad 3G contains a SIM card.

AT&T confirmed the nature of the attack to technology blog Gizmodo. Gawker, Gizmodo's parent Web site, first reported the e-mail harvesting Wednesday.

The script Praetorian made public was a "brute-force attack," according to AT&T's chief security officer Ed Amoroso, who spoke with Gizmodo.

When iPad 3G owners sign up for wireless data service with AT&T, the carrier detects the SIM's 19-digit ICC-ID -- essentially a serial number -- then asks for a contact e-mail address. AT&T uses the e-mail address to populate one of two log-in fields in the iPad's settings screen so that the user has to enter only a password to check his or her account status.

That same e-mail address was what the script harvested. E-mail addresses apparently belonging to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and top executives at Dow Jones, The New York Times Co. and Time Warner were among those collected.

AT&T turned off access to the feature Tuesday and apologized to customers in a statement it issued Wednesday. It also said that only e-mail addresses linked to each ICC-ID, not financial information or other personal data, was snatched from its servers.

iPhone 4 unveiled and has more than 100 new functions

Apple confirmed weeks of speculation Monday with the introduction of a new iPhone handset.

Chief executive Steve Jobs unveiled the handset during a keynote at the company's World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco, declaring the new iPhones the biggest upgrade to the line since its 2007 release

Central to the iPhone 4 will be a new display screen dubbed 'Retina.' The touchscreen display will support resolutions of up to 960x640. Other hardware upgrades include extended battery life, a 3 axis gyro and both front and back-mounted cameras.

Running on the iPhone 4 handsets will be the fourth incarnation of the iPhone OS, which the company is now calling iOS4. First unveiled in April, the firmware update adds support for multi-tasking and folders.

For iPhone 4 users, the OS will also support FaceTime video chat. The wi-fi service allows iPhone 4 users to connect and chat through the handset's front-mounted video camera.

The back-mounted 4 megapixel camera capable of shooting HD video and editing movie clips through an optional mobile iMovie application.

"FaceTime video calling sets a new standard for mobile communication, and our new Retina display is the highest resolution display ever in a phone, with text looking like it does on a fine printed page," said Jobs.

"We have been dreaming about both of these breakthroughs for decades."

Jobs said that the iPhone 4 would be hitting shelves in the US and UK on 24 June with pre-orders opening on 15 June. The 16 GB model will retail at $199 and the 32GB model at $299. The 8GB iPhone 3GS will be offered as a $99 handset.

The company plans to deliver iOS 4 to iPhone and iPod Touch users as a free update on 21 June.

Apple to launch new iPhone today

Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, will unveil the company's newest iPhone at WWDC in San Francisco.

The iPhone is expected to have a new, squarer look, as well as a host of new features, including an improved camera, better battery life, more storage and a higher resolution display.

Apple traditionally uses its annual Worldwide Developers Conference to update its iPhone range. The event brings together engineers from around the world who write software and applications for Apple products, such as the iPhone and recently released iPad.

iPad arrives in Europe and Asia

Long lines snaked down streets in London, Paris, Frankfurt and Tokyo as eager buyers vied to wield their credit cards. Screams and cheers rose from the crowd in central London as students, professionals and self-proclaimed computer geeks clutched boxes containing the slim black device.

"If I was a music fan, it would be like the launch of a Lady GaGa album in the U.S.," said comedian Stephen Fry, known in Britain as a champion Tweeter.

Apple Inc., based in Cupertino, California, said earlier this month that it had sold 1 million of the devices in the United States in just 28 days. The company started taking orders for the iPad abroad on May 10 after pushing back its international delivery target amid extreme demand at home.

Like Steve most of the iPad users play too much with the iPad

The iPad has doomed Apple, according to market anlaysts that are expecting the tablet to spell trouble for its maker.

Rather than killing off the netbook, the iPad is harming sales of the iPod and Macbooks. It seems the buyers of Ipads would normally have got a more expensive Macbook or an iPod Touch and apparently are clever enough not to do both. The Alphawise report, just published, reported that 44 per cent of IPad owners surveyed said they would forgo purchasing a notebook, and 24 per cent said the notebook they wouldn't buy would have been a Macbook while 20 per cent said it would have been a PC.

Steve is playing without flash

According to a recent survey, researchers at Changewave found that the most common dislike among Ipad owners was the device's lack of Flash support. Apple's dear leader Steve Jobs has made it clear that he will not allow devices running Iphone OS to use Adobe's Flash.

Given that over 80 %of respondents in the report claim to use their Ipads for web browsing and almost 50 % for viewing video, areas in which Flash is particularly pervasive, it's not surprising that users find lack of support for the format annoying.

Dutch App Store for iPad

Apple has launched the App Store for its iPad Tablet PC in the Netherlands. This allows people who already imported an iPad from the U.S., to purchase apps directly on iPad using your their iTunes account.

Previously one could only log on with the American iTunes store profile, however, users needed a U.S. credit card to purchase apps. As a result many were limited to downloading free applications.

It is striking that the store has already launched. The iPad is expected to launch in the Netherlands in July. Perhaps it has to do with the launch of the device in some other European countries like Britain and Germany on May 28.

New Apple iPod Touch

The new Apple iPod Touch. The 64GB device features a 2-megapixel camera, and, based on its markings, appears to be a test unit. Even if we can assume this device is real, it's still anybody's guess as to whether this supposed iPod Touch will ever reach store shelves. An iPod Touch with camera was rumored to be released last fall, but the device was reportedly scrapped at the last minute due to production problems.
